Sneem Village
Back to all places
Nestled on the picturesque Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry, Sneem is a captivating village that captures the essence of Ireland’s southwest charm. Perched on the estuary of the River Sneem, it elegantly spills into the stunning Kenmare Bay. The village, approximately 22 kilometers west of Kenmare along the N70 road, is known as ’the knot’—a fitting moniker that signifies its pivotal role in connecting the Killarney Mountain Road with the Ring of Kerry’s Kenmare and Waterville Roads. Rich in history, Sneem’s quaint streets and colorful houses tell tales of a bygone era. The village gained attention back in 1944 when it became the filming location for the beloved Irish movie "The Quiet Man," starring John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara. The film, set in a comparable village setting, embraced Sneem’s enchanting landscapes, further embedding it in Ireland’s cultural narrative. Sneem holds a connection with the literary world as well. The famed Irish priest and author John O’Donohue was inspired by Sneem’s natural beauty for many of his meditations and writings. Throughout the 19th century, Sneem was known for its bustling market days when traders would gather, arriving by boats from the estuary to sell their wares, from fish to textiles, painting a vibrant picture of community life. Indeed, Sneem is imbued with fascinating folklore and legends. The village is said to be home to the ’Little People’ or fairies, often depicted in traditional Irish folklore. Visitors often come seeking the mystical and reputedly enchanted Fairy Forts, intriguing ringforts believed to be the abode of these whimsical creatures. Sneem is not just a picturesque stop on the Ring of Kerry; it’s a living storybook, echoing tales of Ireland’s rich heritage, a haven for poets, painters, and pilgrims alike. The village stands as a serene sanctuary where the past and present intertwine, inviting those who wander its paths to weave into its narrative.
